Joe Manganiello on Werewolves Verus Vampires

Every Sci-fi fan has asked the age old question: who would come up victorious in a battle between a werewolf and a vampire? There's are lot of theories and True Blood's own Joe Manganiello isn't any different. Joe plays werewolf Alcide, which has given him a lot of experience on the show brawling with werewolves, vampires, and shape-shifters alike. Funny thing is, for Joe, shape-shifters don't even make the cut. The real actions lies when a werewolf and vampire meet head on. Joe admits that when it comes to brute strength vampires are superior, especially one that is thousands of years old. However, even with this being the case, there are werewolves that could undoubtedly take out a vampire. In Joe's opinion, Alcide is a werewolf that could hold his own  in any brawl against any supernatural. Joe notes,
"That was important for me in creating Alcide...A vampire can get away with being pale, thin and skinny but still being powerful. Werewolves have to look like animals — really big, strong animals. I wanted Alcide to be as powerfully built as possible so you would see him and think that he could take out a vampire. I think throwing him into an arena, you would have a pretty good fight between the vampires and the werewolves."
What about the other supernaturals? Where would a shape-shifter fit in this chain of strength? Joe doesn't really see a shape-shifter winning in a battle between a werewolf or a vampire, unless that shape-shifter was extraordinary...perhaps like Sam Merlotte or his little brother Tommy Mickens? Joe reveals,
"werewolves are generally thought of as being the strongest of the shape-shifters. Probably the most egotistical, too!"
It seems like Joe has been able to give Alcide all the traits he needs to be top of his pack; Season 3 is going to have a lot of face offs between vampires and werewolves...perhaps the age old question will be answered Sunday nights on HBO's True Blood.
