James Frain of True Blood Chats About Tron: Legacy

We've seen vampires come out of the coffin in True Blood. But have you ever wondered what it would be like if technology became the center of daily life? James Frain (Franklin Mott) recently had the opportunity to find out first hand, playing the character of Jarvis, in his new movie Tron: Legacy. The actor recently sat down with the Canadian magazine Tribute to discuss the film along with his co-stars Michael Sheen, Beau Garrett, and Bruce Boxleitner.

All About Jarvis

Jarvis is the head of the secret police in the Tron world and is charged with keeping other programs in line as well as obtaining information about those programs that do step out of line. Unfortunately for Jarvis, he doesn't do this very well and has a hard time getting things accomplished. It sounds like Frain can relate to Jarvis' predicament however. When asked if he felt guilty about spending too much time using today's technology, he says:

"I'm cursed with wanting to get every new gadget that's out there. I'm drawn like a moth to the flame, and yet totally inept at using them. It makes no sense to me whatsoever. I don't know if anybody else is like this, but I refuse to read any operating manuals."

The Human Side of Technology

Though the movie has a heavy technological theme, Frain insists that at the heart of the film it's all about the relationships between the flawed human characters. Flawed or not, the Tron idea of human certainly is different from what we're used to seeing, at least from James Frain. Our dear former vampire sports a shaved and white painted head in a truly incredible transformation for the film.

Acting in a World That Doesn't Exist...Yet.

Speaking of transformations how does one act in a technological world that doesn't exist except on the silver screen?  Frain describes a scene where he has to give a theatrical speech to thousands of "programs" in an arena with a lot of people in it and things flying around. But in actuality he only had himself, a camera, a blue screen and some crew members with him. He describes the experience quite aptly by saying:

"It was a bit like doing off-Broadway theatre, where you just imagine what you're doing; you just put it out there and hope for the best."

If James' performance on True Blood is any indication, we're quite sure that he'll be fantastic in Tron: Legacy. The film will be hitting theaters here in the United States on December 17.
