Charlaine Harris recently spoke with the Australian website Girl.com.au
about her scheduled appearance at the Hub's
True Blood events in Australia in September and about the upcoming release of the new
Sookie Stackhouse novel,
Dead in the Family. In the interview
Charlaine talks about the success of the fictional world she has created and where she draws the ideas for her stories and characters from. The initial idea for the series,
Charlaine explains, was about a woman dating a
vampire. From that simple premise she built the world of
Bon Temps, incorporating ideas and characters from "all over" as she puts it. The character of
Sookie was not based on a particular person, but made up of aspects from many people that
Charlaine knew or observed.
Charlaine also discusses how the books were adapted to the screen as the hit
HBO series
True Blood. She was not surprised that the series made it onto film as she had had offers for the screen rights before. She found that
Alan Ball's offer was the most "interesting creatively".
Charlaine is not concerned about how closely the TV series follows the books, acknowledging that the different media require different treatments, and is clearly happy that the show follows the books in spirit, if not to the letter. And in any case, she notes, if the show was like the books (all from
Sookie's perspective) poor
Anna Paquin would never get time to rest. And as for
Dead in the Family,
Charlaine isn't giving much away.
"Sookie's healing from her misadventures in Dead and Gone, Eric's maker comes to town . . . all the issues explored are family issues."
Charlaine will be appearing at the Hub Production's
True Blood events in Sydney and Melbourne on the 25th and 26th of September along with
Sam Trammell,
Kristin Bauer and
John Billingsley.
