It's no secret to
True Blood fans that the
vampire fad is still riding high. Over at
NPR,
Margo Adler takes a closer look at what makes these creatures of the night so darn popular. During the segment "
All Things Considered," Adler relays her experience reading 75
vampire novels over the past 9 months -- everything from the classics (Bram Stoker's
Dracula) to the teen novels (
Sucks to be Me by Kimberly Pauley), and of course
Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels. Her own personal fascination with
vampires lead her to research the various
vampire trends of the past. Most
vampire trends tend to be linked to a cultural movement. Stoker's Dracula, for example, represented a time when Eastern Europe feared immigrants and illness. In the 1980's, the trend is most commonly attributed to the Cold War and the spread of AIDS. But what about today's
vampires? What does the likes of our dear
Bill Compton say of this era? Adler notes that today's
vampires all want one thing: mortality.
"Whether it's Bill Compton wanting to embrace his humanity in True Blood, or the entire Cullen family rejecting humans as nourishment in the Twilight saga, these modern vamps are all struggling to be moral even though they are predators by nature."
So our modern-day
vampires just want to be human.... again... Or at least most of them do. Something tells me
Eric is may buck the trend. Check out Margo Adler's entire broadcast and her list of 75
vampire novels at the link below.
