"Once you start reading the material Alan Ball and the other writers wrote, it's so textured, it's so layered. These characters really have hearts and souls. There's a lot to bite into as an actor."Describing the role of Alcide, Joe explains that he is ordered by Eric to protect Sookie and help her around werewolf society in her search for Bill. He is dealing with all sorts of problems--heartbreak over Debbie Pelt (Brit Morgan), feelings of animosity towards vampires--and while he won't say whether anything romantic happens between him and Sookie, Joe elusively says that "bonding happens." His scenes have been predominantly with Anna Paquin, and he praises her for being so generous and commanding as an actress. He loves hanging out with the other actors in the cast and says that "it's a big family over there." In order to prepare for the role, Joe drew from some of his own past experience in construction (Alcide works at a contracting company). He also studied wolf behavior and movement to incorporate into his performance, and he began a workout regime to get bulked up. He knew going into it that he would frequently have his body put on display. His trainer helped him get into "werewolf shape." When asked what we have to look forward to, Joe teased,
"People are going to lose their minds. One of the highlights of my week was getting those scripts. There's going to be a lot of blood this year. They're going to explain a lot of things that the fans wanted explained. You're going to be introduced to a new race, the werewolves. It's going to be wild."Joe is thrilled to be part of such a great show, and he seems ready to embrace the passionate fandom. He's going to fit right in, don't y'all think?
