True Blood's Sam Trammell Joins Stand Up to Cancer Event

Sam Trammell, Sam Merlotte, True Blood premiereSam Trammell, True Blood's shifty Sam Merlotte, will join a list of celebrities scheduled to participate in the "Stand Up to Cancer" television fundraiser. Nicknamed a "roadblock" event, the telethon will air on Friday, September 10th, on all broadcast networks and cable channels simultaneously and commercial-free. The telethon aims to raise money that will push cancer research forward with the goal of eventually living in a world without cancer. Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) is a very different cancer association. The money they raise typically goes out as one of two different grants: Dream Team grants - given to scientists from different institutions who work together toward finding treatments instead of competing against each other, or Innovative Research grants which are awarded to high-risk cancer research projects which could lead to important findings. The Stand Up to Cancer telethon is dedicated to the 12 million cancer survivors in the U.S., proving that innovative research can save lives. Sam is joining a long list of celebrities scheduled to participate including George Clooney, Randy Jackson, Rob Lowe, Jane Lynch, Will Smith, Elizabeth Banks, Lance Armstrong, Sally Field, Tony Hawk, Seth MacFarlane, and Maura Tierney. Musical performances will include Billie Joe Armstrong, Neil Diamond, Lady Antebellum, Leona Lewis, Martina McBride, and Stevie Wonder. The event will be hosted by the big three network news anchors:Katie Couric, Brian Williams, and Diane Sawyer. Laura Ziskin, SU2C co-founder and executive producer of the broadcast telethon explains:
"Plain and simple, cancer takes too much from us... Loved ones lost to it, pain and suffering endured by those in treatment, even the recent report that cancer has the most devastating economic impact of any cause of death... this disease exacts a very high price. We want people all over the country to rise up and say, 'ENOUGH!'"
Ziskin herself is a cancer survivor, so she understands the struggle for herself. Donations of any denomination are welcome. 100% of the proceeds go toward cancer research. The celebrities will be working the phone banks for the telethon, giving you the opportunity to speak to a star while making a donation. So tune in September 10th at 8pm EST & PST for an hour long, commercial free fight against cancer, on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, HBO, Bio, Current TV, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO Latino, MLB Network, mun2, Showtime, Smithsonian Channel, The Style Network, TV One and VH1. The celebrity phone bank will open at 7:30pm. Sources: standup2cancer.org - More Celebrities Join Stand Up to Cancer Event popwatch.ew.com - Celebrity Lineup Keeps on Growing!
