Sam Trammell's Unexpected Career

Sam Trammell never expected to be an actor. In college, he was actually a semiotics major at Brown University. (Semiotics means that Sam was studying multiple things at once, including Marxist theory, feminist theory, linguistic theory, film theory, psychoanalysis, and a few other things.) Sam actually did most of his work in French philosophy. However, that changed when Sam was performing in a college play. According to Sam, he realized while working on the play that he wanted to be an actor. He said,
"I wanted to stop thinking. I wink when I say that. You have to be smart to be a good actor. But acting took me out of my head and back into my body."
After that, Sam did something that no actor is supposed to ever do; he dropped off headshots and resumés in person at casting agencies and offices. Luckily for him, he was not kicked out (which is what commonly what happens), but actually was able to get some freelance jobs with a couple agents! From that point on, Sam was able to procure some auditions and even some guest spots on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Medium, and Judging Amy. And of course as we now know, Sam has is now the shifter Sam Merlotte on True Blood, and he's going to be with us in that capacity for a long time!
