Sam Trammell recently spoke with TVGuide.com where he provided some in-depth information regarding Sam Merlotte's family in season 3 of True Blood. What we will discover is that Sam's family are more bad news then he may have anticipated and perhaps should have been better left alone. We learn that Sam's father Joe Lee Mickens (Cooper Huckabee) was in prison doing hard time when Sam's mother, Melinda Mickens (J. Smith-Cameron) learned she was pregnant with Sam and decided to give him up for adoption. Sam explains that his character, "just wants to see what they're like and how bad they are" before returning to Bon Temps. "But he doesn't expect them to bleed back into his life, which is when the problems start."Also Sam provides us with some interesting spoilers that will occur near the end of season 3 including something horrible that Sam did after he was abandoned by his adoptive parents, seen in a flashback scene, which will show "a dark side" of Sam. He states that it will not be until episode 6, when we see the strange way his father "pimped out his wife and son is revealed." As for Sam's love life, it seems that we will not be seeing much action for him in that area but that may change towards the end of season 3 when he hires a new waitress, Holly (Lauren Bowles).
