Kwanten Gets Personal in an Interview with The Advocate
We've all seen a lot of Jason Stackhouse throughout the first three seasons of True Blood. Sure his body has been on full display more than a few times, but so has his personality, his likes, his fears, and his feelings. The man who brings Jason Stackhouse to life, Ryan Kwanten, is a little more reserved. In an interview with The Advocate, Kwanten talks candidly about life, work, and homosexuality. Outside His Comfort Zone
As thankful as Kwanten is for Jason Stackhouse, he also admits that getting those kind of roles continually thrown at him would be disheartening. Getting any opportunity to play someone completely outside his comfort zone is what makes him happiest, and what makes him work the hardest:"I love shooting True Blood, but in the six months that I get off, nothing would be more uninspiring than stepping into a character exactly like Jason Stackhouse. I just want the work to challenge me. I'm a masochist at heart, so I love being told I can't play something and then proving them wrong."Once season 4 of True Blood wraps in early 2011, Kwanten will begin filming In the Family, where he'll be playing serial killer Charles Manson. He has to drop a lot of weight for the role, which isn't an easy task, but it doesn't make Kwanten flinch. He thinks it'll be "a nice change of pace." A lot of attention is paid to Kwanten's insanely good looks, which is par for the course considering he's insanely good looking. However, he's not too worried about his looks upstaging his talent:
"Even if I've got a leading man face or whatever you want to call it, I still very much enjoy delving into a character. I come from the land down under, where we're used to roughing it, so I'll get down and dirty with the best of them."Kwanten is definitely proving that he's not just another pretty face. His role as a police officer in Red Hill is generating lots of buzz, something he's proud of since "what really fascinated" him about the role "was that this guy is full of faults." Excelling at complex roles gives Kwanten a lot to smile about.
The Gay Factor
Alan Ball, True Blood's creator and producer, enjoys delving into homosexuality on the show, making certain scenes as gritty and racy as the straight ones. Kwanten hasn't seen any homoerotic action yet, but that doesn't mean he's a stranger to such scenes. In the 2002 Sydney production of Nicky Silver's Fit to Be Tied, Kwanten played Boyd, a bisexual angel from the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. He paraded around in Calvin Klein underwear and angel wings and, even though he had to be coaxed into doing so, he never considered it a risky choice:"If the story's right with the right people behind it, it makes sense to me. I'm not going to limit the roles I play based on who that character is."Kwanten doesn't shy away from the gay factor. He's had male admirers since his early days on the Australian soap Home and Away, and considers those admirers "a loyal fan base... You can't buy that kind of loyalty." There have been rumors that Kwanten stays mum about his love life because he doesn't want to lose any gay fans, something he laughed about:
"...to be honest, it's more than my love life. It was Einstein who once said, "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious." We almost know too much about far too many actors in this day and age — to the point where it becomes harder and harder to see them as a character. So I've always tried to maintain somewhat of an air of mystery."Kwanten comes from a very liberal, open minded family and embracing his male admirers has been a no-brainer. Kwanten's parents "encouraged an open channel of communication," which made discussing just about anything easy, especially when his youngest brother, Lloyd, came out. Acceptance was, and never will be, an issue. Kwanten had the following to say about his brother:
"He's a doctor, so he got every ounce of intelligence in the family. He was probably about 18 when he came out, and I can wholeheartedly tell you that from the day that he did, he was a changed man for the better.
