What Frightens the Stars of True Blood?

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, True Blood's Sam Trammell, Rutina Wesley, and Kristin Bauer van Straten admitted what scares them.  For Trammell (Sam Merlotte), it's movies like "Paranormal":

"Something like Paranormal I haven't even seen the end of... That kind of thing is really scary so I watch it in pieces. I love Dario Argento. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still horrifying to me because it's so faux-documentary, it's so scrappy, it's horrifying."

Wesley's all-time scary movies are Arachnophobia, Friday the 13th, and Psycho.  Besides her fear of spiders, she also admitted to being afraid on set with wolves:

"It was scary being on set with some of the animals.  They were gentle as can be but just the fact that you're on with hybrid wolves is a little scary."

What does van Straten consider scary?  Apparently, putting it all out there while acting, and potentially looking silly in the process.  She describes her feelings the day she filmed the fight scene with Stephen Moyer (Vampire Bill): "When I had the fight scene with Stephen Moyer [Bill] I really just had to go for it and snarl and make guttural sounds that felt so ridiculous.  Every time they said cut, I said, 'Really? Do I look ridiculous?' That was the scariest day. Stephen helped me through it." Also interviewed were Katie Featherston & Micah Sloat (Paranormal Activity 2), Nina Dobrev & Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries), and Jackson Rathbone (Twilight). No matter what creeps these stars out, the fact that they make it through the trials and tribulations of filming such a challenging show (or movie), with grace and aplomb, earns them major points in our book. Alexander Skarsgard Discusses Moomins and True Blood

On Playing Two Completely Different Characters

Alexander Skarsgard has been busy during his hiatus from True Blood.  He completed work on the film Melancholia, has been working on the blockbuster Battleship and has lent his voice to the already star-studded international cast of Moomins and the Comet Chase. The 34 year old actor plays alongside his father, the great Stellan Skarsgard but the family affair isn't the only thing that has made him excited about the project.  He is also thrilled to be voicing Moomintroll.  He describes his character as:

"A young boy and slightly naive, but very determined and brave… If you give your kids love and trust then they will feel the way Moomintroll feels when he goes out into the world."

While American fans may not know they philosophy of the Moomins, Alex grew up with Tove Jansson's work. He notes,

"I grew up in Sweden and [the book's] still famous in Sweden. I just thought it would be a fun thing to be apart of and the world."

Skarsgard's character in this film is completely different from Eric Northman and when asked how he plays two characters that are the complete opposite of each other he replies:

"You need to build a connection to the characters and have to believe in every single moment. If I don't feel that I can't do a good job. Whenever I read a script the most important question is: Do I understand the character? Do I understand the characters journey? If you don't feel that you don't fit in the role. But I've definitely felt it, both, the Moomin and Eric."

On True Blood

Skarsgard reveals that filming for Season 4begins soon and says that he does not have any information on storylines.  He talks about the sometimes gruesome scenes he has and referring in particular to the one where he literally tore a human apart he says that he does not get queasy during filming.  In fact, he actually finds it fun to do those scenes.  When talking about the fake blood that is used on set, Skarsgard says:

"It's very sweet, a kind of corn syrup. Sweet and sticky. It tastes not exactly great and we really don't want to swallow it. In the scene I was tearing apart that human my body was covered with that stuff. It's so sticky, I couldn't get my clothes off untill it was dry. My pants were like glued onto my legs. So I had to go back to the trailer and take a shower – with clothes on – only to get them off."

On Melancholia

Filming was recently completed on Lars von Trier's Melancholia, the first film in which Skarsgard acts with his father (voice work for Moomins aside).  He says that he was very excited with everything about this film from the director, to his co-stars and his part.  When asked about the rumors that von Trier is difficult to work for he replies:

"For me he is a teddy bear. It was definitely one of the greatest experiences of my life and my career. It was fantastic to work with him. We had a lot of freedom, he really supported the actors and wants them to improvise, develop own ideas and play them. He's a genius. He looks at what we are doing and then comes and whispers something in your ear, changes things a tiny bit and let you play it all over again. The continuity of the movie doesn't really matter to him, nor any mark the actors are supposed to stand on. Everything is very playful. Great."

 True Blood's casting director Junie Lowry Johnson will be sharing her secrets with would-be actors!  Johnson has joined the line up for the upcoming Actorfest LA "Television Casting: From Guest Starring to Going to Network" workshop on November 6, 2010 at the California Market Center in the Fashion Theatre from noon to 1:30 p.m. Johnson joins other casting directors including Dorian Frankel ("Parks and Recreation," "Curb Your Enthusiasm"); John Frank Levey ("Southland," "ER"); Jason La Padura ("The Event," "Heroes"); and Lori Openden, Senior VP of Casting for the CW Network. How True Blood Defines Vampire Sex

Experts Weigh In

There are a multitude of tv shows and movies these days about vampires. HBO's True Blood spends each season exploring the intimate relationships between vampires and humans, sometimes in shocking ways. For three seasons we have watched the intriguing way that Bill, Sookie, Lorena, Franklin, Tara, Talbot, Eric et al weave their brand of lovemaking into their lives. L. A. Banks, writer of the popular Vampire Huntress Legends, has this to say about vampire sex:

"Everything is more intense, more dramatic, and more passionate than what one would normally expect. It's a love that can go all night but without the little blue pill. The biting on the neck has to happen. What it does is it makes the sex something exotic and taboo. It makes it terrible and intriguing at the same time."

Knowledgeable viewers of the head turning, blood soaked sex scenes in True Blood would more than likely agree that vampire sex is a lot of things, including intriguing. Scenes such as those with Bill and Sookie on the pristine chenille bed spread in Bill's house, the flashback scene of Bill and Lorena rolling around in the blood of their two recent victims and Talbot's death scene are more in the realm of "taboo sex".  For vampires, however, these types of sexual exploits are common practice. As evidenced in scenes with Pam and the dancer at Fangtasia, the scene with Eric and Talbot, and the relationship between Queen Sophie Ann and Hadley, vampire sex has little or no boundaries. Anyone who is willing - human or vamp is fair game. According to University of Richmond professor Elisabeth Gruner, this dates back as far as 1872 in the novelCarmilla:

"Part of the allure of vampires was the fact that they weren't constrained to the same societal norms as mere mortals. "

Sam Trammell Visits The Daily Habit on Fuel TV

Making Fun of "Vampire" Products

Famous for his role as Sam Merlotte on HBO's True Blood, Sam Trammell was a celebrity guest on The Daily Habit, October 26, 2010 .  Airing weeknights at 9:30 on Fuel TV, the show features action-sports athletes, people from the world of entertainment, and musical guests. Also appearing on the show were pro surfers Benji Weatherley & Kalani Robb, actor/comedian Hal Rudnick, and musical guest Chiodos.  Not entirely unlike his character, Trammell was able to poke fun at vampires while contemplating some "ridiculous vampire-themed products". In the interview Trammell discusses the Sesame Street parody joking that even though the show has "made" it his character wasn't included.  Keeping with what the other cast members have said, he says that he has no idea what is going to happen on Season 4 but he does know they are really going to push the envelope with the shapeshifting idea.  He does say he knows there will be "all kinds of nudity and blood".  Did you happen to catch the show?  Let us know what you thought. Tickets for San Diego Comic-Con 2011 On Sale November 1st

Tickets for San Diego Comic-Con 2011 go on sale November 1, 2010.  Comic-Con is the largest convention of its kind in the world is "dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture." The event will be held July 21st to 24th, 2011 at the San Diego Convention Center.  Attendees can purchase the one and four-day passes at 9:00am PST on November 1st by clicking here.  Four-day passes for Comic-Con 2010 were sold out 8 months before the convention and one-day passes were sold out by April.  Passes to the shows Preview Night were sold out during the 2010 Comic-Con.  2010 was the fourth straight year that tickets sold out so be sure to get yours early to avoid disappointment!

True Blood at Comic-Con

For the last three years True Blood has conducted a panel at Comic-Con and the expectation is that they will be there again in 2011.   They have a sponsored link on the website for this years event, however there are no guarantees which actors will attend.  In previous years stars like Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton), Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman) and Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam Ravenscroft) have attended.

Charlaine Harris

In addition to many of our favorite True Blood stars, Charlaine Harris, the author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, typically attends Comic-Con as well.  She has participated in the True Blood panel for the last few years and also attends events for her other novels.  Given that CBS has just signed a deal to make a television series from Ms. Harris' Harper Connelly Series, there is a strong likelihood she will be at Comic-Con 2011.
