Reality Bites - Session 4: Heads or Tail?

Every week, a diverse panel of Bon Temps residents gather to watch and discuss each new episode of HBO's True Blood. The sessions are moderated by Nina Harken, PhD candidate interested in finding out what the real folks of Bon Temps think of the portrayal of their town and their people on HBO's hit series.

NINA Well, here we are, the third episode into the season. And no shortage of storylines. So, let's talk. Open forum. Who has something to say? [A beat of silence] NINA Oh, come on now, somebody must have something to say about this episode. BYRON Ahem... well, while I admire Jason Stackhouse for attempting to apply himself to something of value, I question whether this is a serious consideration of his and the writers. I would hate to have something as important as joining the police force to be brushed aside. NATHAN Yeah, that was a little weird. BYRON I also did not think it was very wise of the sheriff to quit. HENRIETTA Do you blame the poor man? He's old. In the TV show Bon Temps was essentially crime free. and then suddenly, he's dealin' with vampires, serial killers, sexual deviants -- ELIJAH Yum. HENRIETTA -- dear Lord. Now they have this man who is missin' his head... MADISON But we know who did it. NATHAN Bud doesn't. HENRIETTA I suppose I should not be surprised that a vampire would do such a terrible thing to the human body. ELIJAH Oh, darlin', you ain't seen nothing yet. HENRIETTA And I thought a vampire couldn't compel a human into inviting them in? Doesn't that violate the spirit of the rules? Crickets... NINA OK well. How about a different topic? MADISON There was definitely not enough -- HENRIETTA, NATHAN, ELIJAH, CHUCK, TRACY, BYRON together: Eric. MADISON Whoa. You guys noticed, too? I mean, okay, he gave Lafayette the car, which was kinda funny.  And he took the bullet for the werewolf in the beginning only to kill him later, but that was it. Serious Eric shortage. CHUCK I just appreciate that vampires are all individuals, not like those werewolves.  They all looked like biker redneck hicks! MADISON That new werewolf is kinda cute...Alcide...but he's not Eric.  I'm surprised he actually was protecting Sookie though, you know? CHUCK If his life is on the line, he'll let Sookie die.  Werewolves are all selfish greedy bastards. TRACY Really?  Cause I thought all vampires were sorta gay. [CHUCK'S fangs appear as he lurches toward TRACY.  MADISON'S eyes are shielded by her mother's hand, HENRIETTA grabs her cross and ducks under the table.] ELIJAH Oh Charles, put the fangs away. When you reach my age, you'll find that men and women sorta... blur together. NATHAN How progressive...for a vampire. ELIJAH Since you brought it up ...how about that scene with Bill and Lorena?  I must try that.  Madison...interested? MADISON Ew...you don't even look a little bit like Eric. ELIJAH Nathan? NINA We're supposed to be discussing the episode, not planning our social lives. ELIJAH Jealous? HENRIETTA I swear on my Mother's grave that I have never seen anything quite as disturbing as those two vampires...making love...if that's what you want to call it... NATHAN Bill spent a lot of time in flashback this episode. I mean, we got to see why he hates Lorena so much. ELIJAH That one was Bill's own fault. You cannot go back to your human life. It just complicates everything. NATHAN Regardless... I think there was too much in this episode. It was really heavy and didn't really advance the story at all. They did the same thing in the second season - slowed down the pace of the whole show. MADISON Yeah, but we got to see Bill's wife and his kid. It was kinda cool. NATHAN But kinda long. Between that and Sam's story... BYRON I do agree that Sam's story has gotten a bit out of hand. It seems as though the only shifters this series portrays are drunks, criminals, or liars. And where did his brother put Sam's money when he was a bird??? TRACY Just like weres are all bikers. Or Nazis. NINA So ultimately, some of you think -- NATHAN In some cases. NINA -- the series stereotypes certain people? BRYON, CHUCK, and TRACY Yes. NINA Interesting.  Now let's move into the portion of the panel where we talk about Bon Temps.  Any one want to start? MADISON I think its sad that nobody really went to Eggs's funeral.  I mean, he was a part of the town for a little while and still nobody came.  Not even to support Tara.  That was kinda sad.  I think the real Bon Temps would show more support for their bartender.  Oh and speaking of Tara...a one nighter with a creepy British vampire? TRACY I knew that Bill Compton was up to no good.  Can't trust a vamper. NINA But what about Bon Temps? NATHAN I think that there isn't a lot of focus on Bon Temps this year...which I don't like.  All of the main characters are doing their own things now.  I kinda liked in the first two seasons when they all had to work together. ELIJAH Or at least were getting in trouble together. HENRIETTA Too many murders.  The young people may drink, do drugs, and have sex out of wedlock, but there are no murders--even with vampires and werewolves running around.  Even they know there is a line that they can not cross.  Bon Temps is a town, not a mass grave. BYRON Also, the show makes it seem like the only jobs you can have in Bon Temps is being on the road crew or in the food service industry. That Lafayette has two legal jobs and those are both it.  There are plenty of sophisticated jobs in town as well. NINA All interesting viewpoints.  Well, I think that's good for now.  Everyone enjoy next week off while you watch the fireworks.  We'll see everyone back here in two weeks. This column is a parody of the Gothic fantasy series, True Blood, and as such, is presented here for your amusement. True Blood Welcomes Lindsay Pulsipher as Crystal Norris

Lindsay Pulsipher has always dreamed of being on the big stage, and even though she in on the TV and not on Broadway, I don't think she is complaining. True Blood viewers saw a mysterious glimpse of her on last episode where she is going to play Crystal Norris. Jason and Crystal are going to become very close and have a special relationship.
"The writers are really focusing on the relationship between Crystal and Jason," she said from Los Angeles. "Up to this point, he has never settled down, and I think she really knocks him off his feet. They have this magical relationship, and it's brand new for both of them. It's kind of a powerful, explosive relationship."
While True Blood is known for it's eye brow raising scenes, Lindsay says that she is not worried about it because she has talked to the show and they have agreed to allow her to step out of the scene when she is uncomfortable with the nudity. She said that she has a very trusting relationship with the producers.
Lindsay started acting school shortly after graduating from her high school, it was then she was picked up for a stint in "Touched by an Angel." Later, she starred in "The Beast" which included the recently deceased Patrick Swayze. Lindsey thought that Patrick was an amazing actor.
So what does Lindsay think about her new opportunity on True Blood?
"Right now, my opportunities are really great, and I hope 'True Blood' makes it more available for me," she added. "I think this show has an amazing fan base. I'm hoping this will lead to other things."
Welcome aboard, Lindsay, we can't wait to see Jason and Crystal in their "explosive" relationship. Source: sltrib.com (Photo credit:  HBO.com)

Alexander Skarsgard: Naked and Loving It

Oh, Eric. Where would we be without you? True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard, or vampire sheriff Eric Northman, gave a delightful interview to PopEater. Right off the bat, we get some True Blood info. Eric has some scores to settle.
"You find out pretty early on that something happened a thousand years ago, that Eric lost someone, and now he's getting the opportunity to avenge that person's death. So he's going to try to do that, and it's not easy."
Alex goes on to warn us about a "very, very graphic scene" coming up involving himself and another man.
"I'm not a prude. I'm from Sweden, and it's different there. If it makes sense, I'll do nudity, and it's made sense every single time I'm naked on the show. And I love to be naked. It's kind of liberating."
Glad to hear that. We also know Eric is obsessed with Sookie. (Although who isn't nowadays?) But it seems this season, his obsession becomes a little more intense.
"Eric is intrigued by Sookie... there is something different about Sookie, and he wants to figure out what that is -- what she is. And while it's fun to play around with Bill, to tease him, it's not just a game anymore."
Alex discusses his attraction to darker roles, citing his characters in the animated film "Metropia," and the upcoming "Melancholia." As for his taste in music, Alex favors British and Swedish punk rock, mentioning a number of bands and artists he is currently interested in, including the Buzzcocks, Ebba Gron, and Theresa Andersson. Speaking of music... about that Lady Gaga....
"The reason I did the 'Paparazzi' video is that the director, Jonas Akerlund, is a fellow Swede and a good friend of mine, and he called and asked me to do it... But I didn't want to do something if we'd just be walking down the beach or holding hands or that sort of thing."
No worries were Gaga is concerned. The video is much more fun, of course, and was very popular.
"The thing is, you can work on a movie for three months, and no one sees it, and then you do something like this for six hours, and that's what people talk about!"
Does that mean Alex will devote more of his career to music videos?
"That's my new career. I'm going to quit acting and do music videos from now on. I'm over 'True Blood.' I'm officially quitting right now!"
Joking aside, I've had one too many of my favorite non-vampire TV actors recently announce they're leaving, so forgive me if I'm a little sensitive to such comments. Thankfully, we still have plenty of Eric to enjoy. Source: popeater.com (Photo Credit: Screencap by James)

Nelsan Ellis Had to Find His Lafayette

Nelsan Ellis is nothing at all like the character he portrays in True Blood. Lafayette Reynolds is a flamboyant gay man but is also masculine in his attitude. In his recent interview with Vibe, Nelsan revealed that he had a difficult time finding the Lafayette he wanted to portray.  When he auditioned, the casting director told him he was being too stereotypical.
"They figured I was playing a stereotype or something like that so I got a friend of mine to come and work the audition with me and somehow I found the character inside of me versus putting on something that wasn't real.  Alan Ball wanted the character to be a myriad of things and at first I was skeptical but I somehow found it."
Nelsan said he struggled with the role even after he got the job.  He said it wasn't until the 3rd or 4th episode that his real Lafayette finally revealed himself. What is intriguing to Nelsan is that fans like the character.  He likes the character!  "There's something about the dude that's likeable."  What Nelsan likes about Lafayette is his strength and stillness.
"If you watch Lafayette he doesn't do very much.  He's not quick on his toes unless he gets heated.  He's just in that southern way—sort of sauntering along, being who he is which is something I never intended.  It just happened."
Asked if there have been any repercussions around playing a gay man, Nelsan says that it's within the entertainment industry itself.  He finds it annoying when a casting director or agent can't separate the character from the real person. With regard to the gay community, however, the feedback he's gotten is that they have not seen a guy like Lafayette; he is definitely not a stereotype.
"I think somewhere along the line they didn't like that he was a prostitute.  But I did [laughs].  It's who he is.  I don't think it's a reflection of the gay community, that's just Lafayette.  But this is just from what I hear, I haven't really spoken to the gay community..."
About True Blood, Nelsan referred to the show as a little like "the Jerry Springer of TV shows" with legitimate actors.  He uses words like edgy and sexy.  "With True Blood, you don't know what to expect. You don't know how wild it's gonna get."  He says the show is innovative and each episode looks like a movie, they're shot so well. So what's in store for Lafayette this season?  He is going to fall in love and deal with a complicated relationship with his mother.  Nelsan said that although we'll see a softer side of Lafayette, "there's still gonna be that violent part of Lafayette that don't take no bullshit." When asked if his love interest will be a vampire, werewolf, other supernatural creature or human, Nelsan only said that his lover has "something going on. What, I cannot say." Fortunately for True Blood fans, it sounds like we'll be seeing a lot more facets to our favorite short order cook with nail polish and eye shadow. Source: vibe.com (Photo credit - vibe.com)

Vampire King's End Game

While several new characters have been introduced this season, Russell Edgington is one of the more intriguing ones. In his first episode we found out that he is responsible for kidnapping Bill Compton and that he is working with the werewolves. The big question everyone is asking is why? We know that Russell wants to marry Queen Sophie Anne and unite the two kingdoms but his real motivation for that is unclear. Denis O'Hare, who portrays Russell, tells the New York Post:
"It's kind of like the old royalty of Europe, where you'd get married to prevent an invasion or form an alliance. [Russell] also takes cues from today's politics in terms of playing the media. There comes a point later on when he starts using the media to destroy or create something - it's wonderful."
Russell's kidnapping of Bill has set several other exciting plots in motion for this season. Now that Bill has sworn fealty to the King and is giving up Sookie and his life in Bon Temps, what will Edgington have in store for him? According to O'Hare the plans the King has for Bill are constantly changing.
"What's great about all the characters is that they don't always know what they're doing. They have an idea and a plan, but as they go forward, that plan changes. What Russell initially wants from Bill is much smaller. But what he gets throughout his relationship with Bill is information that leads to a much bigger plan. So Russell himself doesn't always know what he's doing. There are times when you'll see him with Eric [Alexander Skarsgard] or Bill where he'll be dealing lies on at least two different levels - every character is lying about everything. These people are playing a massive game that keeps shifting every episode."
How will the Queen and Eric react to the news about Bill, and how does Russell plan to get the Queen to marry him? Watching his end game unfold will no doubt make for a great season. O'Hare is also excited to see how the season plays out.
"Russell had two very big secrets that paid great dividends for me as an actor. I can't tell you what they are, but everyone is fueled by overarching motives - for respect, for affection, for food. Whatever drives you, is the same for vampires - they used to be human, so quite often they're motivated by their nascent human emotions."

Carrie Preston on Vampires and Redheads

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Carrie Preston's True Blood character Arlene. However, with True Blood in its third season and already picked up for its fourth, it seems Carrie and Arlene are still as important to the show as when it first started. While fans are contemplating the fate of Bill Compton and his relationship with Sookie, Deadbolt interviewed Carrie Preston on vampires, working with Alan Ball, and everyone's favorite redhead waitress, Arlene. When asked how she relates to Arlene, Carrie quickly mentioned the redhead's confidence. Arlene isn't one to deal with fools and takes her job seriously, making sure things get done right. Outside of the bar, Arlene is strong and can deal with whatever situation is thrown her way. Carrie admires the way Arlene seems to pull herself together; even in the most difficult of situations, she still manages to keep her sense of humor. When it comes to being influenced by other people, Carries notes that Arlene is never without a man. She suggests that this is true for many working class Southern women. Arlene seems to believe she needs the help of a man and can't handle  situations on her own. With this in mind, sometimes Arlene makes bad decisions when it comes to finding a partner. For her, it's better to have a bad man than no man at all. In the end though, Arlene always manages to fall back on her own strength, focusing on what's best for her and her children. At the end of season two and now in season three, however, Arlene has found a very good man: Terry Bellefleur. Though he may have some emotional distress over his time in the Marines, he is still a warm-hearted gentleman and Carries hopes that Arlene makes is smart enough to make the decision to keep the relationship going. Aside for her love for Terry's character, another thing Carrie loves is the scene she had with Tara in the bathroom where Arlene is unsure if she slept with Terry or not. Tara bluntly replies "You telling me you date raped Terry Bellefleur?" Carrie loves this scene because the stakes were high for Arlene yet there was a lot of comedy in the situation. It's an example of how good True Blood is at portraying the real balance of every situation: the drama and the comedy that rises up at the same time. It's not just the great scenes that keeps Carrie so excited about the show. It's also the red hair. She notes,
"It's funny because now I have red hair in life but for a long time I was blond. Going to work and putting on the red wig, I noticed that once I got into that red wig and got into costume, the types of people, especially men, that wanted to talk to me and pay attention to me were completely different than the types of men that talk to me when I'm blond. I get to kind of experience two different women on the same day. It was very, very intriguing just from an anthropological standpoint and sociological standpoint to see just the reactions I get... it is slightly different and I do kind of feel different. I feel a little edgier, a little sassier as a redhead. It's been a refreshing change of pace for me because I've been blond for so long. I'm really enjoying it."
She isn't the only redhead on the show; Jessica is not only a redhead, but also a vampire, which begs the question 'what is it with the popularity of vampires?' Carrie has a simple answer to that: in a youth obsessed culture, of course, a vampire is going to be admired. Vampires can stay young and sexy forever. While vampires can stay young forever, not all of them are as well rounded as Carrie. Not only does she act, but she also directs and has a production company. She'd love to shadow a director for True Blood and learn the angles that aren't privy to as an actor during a shoot. She feels she'd learn a lot from the experience both as an actor and director. When asked if she has picked up any tips from director Alan Ball, Carrie notes,
"I pick up a lot from all of the directors. I mean, that's what makes it very interesting for me as an actor, that I get to also watch 100 percent more directors than a director gets to watch. If you're only a director, you really only kind of watch yourself. If you're an actor, you get to see and experience a bunch of different styles, ask questions, and all of that stuff. So yes, I have very much enjoyed not just from Alan, but from all of our directors, getting to know their styles, asking them questions, and talking to them about shots and things like that. It's like a little masterclass."
Carrie seems to be having the time of her life on the set of True Blood. Could it get any better? Of course,  if her husband Michael Emerson is brought onto the show now that Lost is over. Carrie would love to have her husband in the world of True Blood and hopes that there is an opportunity where he can join the fun. Right now though, he is enjoying his break and reconnecting with family, friends, and their dog. Many fans will be focused on the drama between Sookie and Bill, but the more fans see of Arlene, the more they want to learn about her past, her present, her future, and how she keeps her hair such a lovely shade of red. True Blood Season 3 Spoilers: Shifters and Vampires

Kristin from E!Online shares some spoilers with fans regarding Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) and is on-going saga with his shifter family and Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) with her vampire boyfriend/tormentor Franklin Mott (James Frain), who we are still trying to figure out.
George in Michigan: Alright, give it to me straight. What's the deal with Sam's little brother on True Blood? What, you mean little ol' Tommy? He's harmless—in the sociopath, crazy-person sorta way! Marshall Allman, aka Sam's little bro Tommy, is in it for the long haul this season, and a source tells us he intends on "bringing Bon Temps to its knees." Sounds fun, right? "I go in and have a lot of fun," Marshall tells us. "There's not an impulse that I don't act on. I'm tons of fun. And then I'll take your wallet, [and] I'll also steal your girl." Yes, we're hearing some girl-stealing is afoot. Any guesses as to which lovely lady Tommy might have on his arm? Hands off Sookie, L.J., or we'll tell your Dad! (A little old-timey Prison Break humor brought to you by Wentworth's abs.) Julie in Toronto: True Blood, please. Marshall tells us he'll be around well into the "shocking" season finale, and that even though he'll do some pwetty tewibble things to Bon Temps during his stay (yep, he's moving in!), don't judge too quickly. "People will see that I have a heart, but they're just going to be frustrated that I'm not being who I was meant to be," he says, "I suffered a lot of dysfunction, and I just need a lot of love." Sources have also revealed that Tommy might be working to Sam at Merlotte's soon enough, so watch out for that, 'cause that seems to be where all truly terrible people end up at one time or another. (Note: Hands off Arlene, too, buddy. She's with child.) Marybeth in Laurel, Md.: Anything good coming up for Tara on True Blood? That depends on your definition of good. Rutina Wesley tells us our ever-troubled bartender "is gonna struggle with this vampire lover named Franklin Mott. He's very psychological and very hard. So this relationship is not necessarily by choice." Probably not your definition of good, huh? One thing you don't have to worry about? Tara becoming a vamp herself. "Probably not," she says. "I love being human. It's like I'm one of the only humans on the show!"

Oh Lorena! Mariana Klaveno Talks About Episode 3

She promises that she's nothing like her character on True BloodMariana Klaveno also told E! Online that she was as shocked to read the script's scene as the audience was to watch that scene. We're referring to last Sunday's episode that had Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) having a lot of twisted sex with his maker, Lorena.  Whom he hates. Admitting in her interview that the scene was a little uncomfortable to play, Mariana said that it:
"Was actually the most shocking thing that I've ever read in a television script.  My jaw dropped on the floor when I read it and thought, Oh my god, I actually have to do that?!"
She said that when she was handed the script, she was told her parents may not want to watch this episode.  But admitting that she "would rather do a series that is more provocative and pushes the envelope," Mariana said she's working with the best from the writers and producers to the other actors and they got through it. Mariana explained that there are various types of blood used on the show. There is blood for sucking, blood for splattering, sweet blood, sticky blood. It's all icky but fun. Mariana was hesitant to spill the beans on what the dynamic will now be between Lorena and Bill.  But she hinted that there will be changes in the relationship.
Joking about Lorena breaking up Bill and Sookie, Mariana said, "Everybody hates me!  I'll take it as a compliment.  I'm acting!  It's not me in real life, I promise.  I'm actually, normally a nice person.  I do love playing her. She's a delicious character to play."
That being said, could it be possible for us to ever like Lorena? Keep watching True Blood Season 3, Sunday nights on HBO. Source:  E! Online (Photo credit - HBO, Inc.)

Charlaine Harris Discusses the Vampire Outbreak

While vampires have been stretching the human imagination since the earliest of civilizations, Charlaine Harris has simply created an updated, dramatic, and sexy version of the undead. In May 2010, Dead in the Family hit book stores as the tenth installment of the Sookie Stackhouse novels and this June HBO premiered the third season of True Blood, the series inspired by Charlaine's novels. In the books, Sookie is a blond, buxom, telepath living in Bon Temps, Louisiana. As she falls into one dangerous mystery to the next, she must also decide between two vampires: the ex-Confederate Southern gentleman Bill Compton or the Viking Eric Northman. To make matter even more complicated there are tigers, werewolves, maenads, fairies, and shape-shifters all vying for a chance to court Sookie...or to kill her. While Anne Rice set her famous vampire stories in the bayous and French Quarter of Louisiana, Charlaine sets her story in the less creepy Northern Louisiana. Charlaine sees Anne Rice as an integral part of the vampire genre and thinks she did a spectacular job at using Southern Louisiana as the home for her vampires. It was natural then, for Charlaine to use a part of Louisiana that was less known in the vampire genre. While Anne Rice showcases the perspective of vampires, Charlaine wanted to go in a very different direction with her vampire novels. She notes,
"I didn't want to write about being a vampire...I wanted to write about people who were interacting with vampires. I thought it would be fun to write about a woman dating a vampire, so I imagined what kind of woman would do such a stupid thing. It'd have to be a woman who couldn't date humans for another reason."
As it would happen, Sookie's telepathic abilities leave her drained when interacting with humans. She's either listening to their thoughts or trying to keep a steady wall up against all those thoughts crashing in on her. When she's with a vampire, she can let out a sigh of relief as she is unable to hear their thoughts. Another reason why Sookie would want to date a vampire is that in Charlaine's world, they're down to earth. Charlaine says,
"They're just like everyone else...Some of them are good; some are bad...I wanted to kind of anchor them in reality and make them unromantic, since I just thought that would be funny."
Funny is an interesting word to use in the vampire genre. With most television shows and films, vampires are admired for their beauty and superhuman sex appeal. The Twilight movies, CW's The Vampire Diaries, and even True Blood follows this formula in order to get the viewers addicted. This isn't to say Charlaine's novels don't mention sex. On the contrary, Charlaine's novels are aimed for adults. She points out that her novels predate Stephanie Meyer's novels by several years and that while Stephanie Meyer's books keep alive the story of Romeo and Juliet, hers certainly do not. Sookie is not a damsel in distress; she's willing to fight and defend herself when necessary. When it comes to love, Sookie's been betrayed by Bill, has been devastated, has picked up the pieces and has looked in new directions for love. Oh, and then there's the sex. Charlaine's books contain detailed oriented scenes that make any reader feel like they just finished a workout. However, Charlaine refuses to go any further with the differences between her series and that of Stephanie Meyer's. She firmly believes that she is not Stephanie Meyer's critic, and rather she is glad that the Twilight series has been successful. As for dishing about Alan Ball, Charlaine was enthusiastic about the genius who translated her books to TV. As a fan of Six Feet Under, Charlaine knew Alan Ball would do a great job at recreating Sookie's world. She notes,
"I knew that he got the mixture of humor and horror that the books are. I knew he would do them justice...He wouldn't gloss over painful parts and make everything shiny."
With True Blood and the Sookie Stackhouse novels being such a success, one would think Charlaine is too busy for anything else. Aside from creating a world for Sookie to live and love in, Charlaine is busy with her family and a numerous amount of other projects. She lives with her husband, her college-aged daughter (while also keeping an eye on her two other grown up kids), various dogs, and a duck in Arkansas. She is a 10 time best seller, and the body of her work is incalculable. Dynamite Entertainment will be creating a comic based on the first book of her series Harper Connelly. With the sucess of True Blood, not only is her vampire novels getting a bigger readership, but her other novels as well. Charlaine reveals,
"They're selling more than when they were first published...I don't know what happened with those books. I know I was really discouraged when they were released. I really thought at the time, That's the best I can do and if this isn't successful I just don't know what I could do that would be as good. Well, luckily for me, I did come up with something."
Currently, she is working on the eleventh installment of the Sookie saga. When asked about the other writers and all of the vampire stories being produced, Charliane feels that it is a reflection of the current social identity: youth obsessed and perfection searching culture. No matter, because these other vampire novels aren't ruining Charlaine's imaginative creations. Charlaine Harris continues to be an inventive and prolific writer. With every book she writes, she creates a magical world that is accessible to the reader. Her characters are more than vampires, more than supernatural...they're ultimately human. Readers can't ask for more...well, there is one thing we can ask for: more Sookie novels! Credit: Vanity Fair (Photo Credit: shannonemmel.com )

A Moment with Grant Bowler: Head of the Pack

Grant-Bowler-Cooter-Werewolf-TrueBloodIf you have noticed nothing else about the world of True Blood it in its brand new third season, it is that werewolves are now very predominant.  In fact, there has been a werewolf in every episode of the third season thus far.  There has been one pack that stands out amongst the rest: Cooter's pack.  This is the group that is seemingly responsible for the abduction of Bill and that works the vampire King of Mississippi.  This is the same pack that has been labeled as "Neo-Nazis." Recently, TV Guide has had the chance to ask a few questions to Grant Bowler, the actor responsible for bringing Cooter to life. What can you tell us about Cooter and his pack?
"Cooter is a joy to play.  I play him like a redneck Romeo.  These werewolves have a very strong agenda; they're not just kicking around looking for someone to beat on."
What can we expect between Cooter and Bill?
"It starts off professional, but it gets personal very, very quickly.  They just hate each others' guts and need each other dead."
Were you a fan of the show before signing on?
"Yes.  I felt like Alan was writing a comedy - like the world's darkest comedy.  And I loved it."
What's it been like acting in some of those really dark, graphic scenes?
"The amazing thing about True Blood is how far they're prepared to go.  I've never heard one of the directors, or Alan, or any of the writers once say, 'uh, that's going too far.'  I think that's what unique to the show."
What was it like on set with that cast?
"I think there were 34 actors and every one of them was as sharp as a tack, perfectly cast, and brilliant at what they do...It's very laid-back, and they laugh their butts off...that material is so dark and so fraught.  They just laugh from dawn until the next dawn."
Any teasers?
"Expect stuff out of Sookie that you've never seen before...she's a lot more special than you think."

Marshall Allman wants to Wreak Havoc at the Zoo

True Blood's Marshall Allman has quite the imagination. The actor, who plays shapeshifter Sam Merlotte's brother Tommy Mickens, said to Hollywood Crush that he'd like to showcase Tommy's powers even more during True Blood's off season. Since True Blood has minisodes that were aired before the start of Season 3, Marshall has said that he'd like to do one of his own next season with Sam Trammell where both Sam's and his character wreak havoc at a zoo. The idea came to Marshall after he saw one of the Season 3 promotional posters for True Blood, which featured a flock of flamingos at a zoo with the sign "Please Don't Feed the Shapeshifters" posted in the flamingo exhibit. However, Marshall took that idea a step or two farther...
"How much fun would it be if your kid was looking at a monkey in a cage, then he looks to his right, and the monkey is all of the sudden outside of the cage? It's so funny! It would be really cool if all of the sudden there appeared in the fourth season a parrot that showed up and talked to the characters as if it was God. The parrot would be like, 'Gwak, this is God!' I could totally manipulate every character! Could you imagine Lafayette going for a smoke break and a parrot starts talking to him? Oh my gosh!"
Sounds like Marshall's got the right idea and maybe we'll see this concept as a minisode next season. What do you think? Would wreaking havoc like this be something fun to watch before season 4 of True Blood airs? SOURCE: Hollywood Crush (Image Credit: HBO Inc, screenshot by Isis Nocturne)

True Blood Episode 3.03 "It Hurts Me Too" Review

There was plenty of hurt to go around in "It Hurts Me Too," the third episode of True Blood Season 3--some of it seen, but most of it in painful anticipation of what's to come for our beloved characters. "Twisted" is the only way to describe some of the events that unfolded last night, and not just because of the disturbing ending. Picking right up with the confrontation in Sookie's house, Eric jumps in front of the bullet meant for the werewolf, knowing that his blood would be so tempting that the wolf would shift back into human form. "WHO SENT YOU?" he bellows, but the guy wouldn't talk (not knowing that Sookie could read his thoughts, jumbled as they may be, and learn about "Jackson"). Eric rips his throat out and then looks up at Sookie, face dripping with blood: "Got your rug all wet." At least her rug wasn't a Celtic tapestry from 1387, like the one Russell uses to put out the flames on Lorena, sending Talbot into a fit. Russell sits down with Bill for a candid talk about his options. He wonders why Bill has put himself in a position to be so in love with a human, subjecting her to the dangers of the vampire world: "Is it your human welfare you value, or your own desire? You are a fraction of my age--one day you'll see, you can't have both." He sends Bill to bed to think about it, although the agonizing choice has already been made for him. The rest of the episode marks a turning point for Bill as he comes to terms with that... Eric buries the body of the werewolf in a fresh grave, and Sookie asks about his vicious reaction to the "Operation Werewolf" brand on the guy's neck. "It brings back many memories…unpleasant ones." We get no more than that, but I think we can look forward to at least a few more flashbacks with Godric this season to show the reasons for Eric's hatred of werewolves, and this pack in particular. Sookie's attitude towards Eric is definitely softening, as she thanks him for saving her life (again). He walks her back home, and they discuss Jackson, MS. Eric can't go there yet for some reason: "The problems of the world consist of more than finding your missing boyfriend." But he's worried that Sookie will get into trouble (at this point in the series, that's a certainty). Eric only shows up for one more brief scene in this episode, to make a peace offering to Lafayette--sorry Pam's been hard on you, here's a Ferrari! "I'll have to sell you the car for $1 to avoid that pesky gift tax." He wants Lafayette to see that there are benefits to working for vampires. In a cheap motel across town, Tara is having creepy sex with Franklin. In the heat of the moment, she forgets her prejudice against vampires and tells him to bite her. "No," he says, retracting his fangs, "because you want me to." Afterwards, they're having a pleasant chat, until Franklin gets a little too personal (I mean, the nerve of some guys! Asking her name…). Tara had escaped what she was feeling over Eggs for a little while, but the harsh reality of her situation came back and sent her rushing away. While in the middle of some important business with Yvetta, Pam gets interrupted by a phone call from Jessica, freaking out over the missing trucker. "So, the problem you have is that there is no dead body in your house? Doesn't sound like a problem to me. Gotta run," she hangs up the phone and returns to Yvetta, "Lie back, sweetheart, and think of Estonia." After the incident on the road, Sam storms into the Mickens house: "I'm not the kind to skip out on his own blood 'n kin." Of course, now that he's accepted that this is his family, he's going to have to deal with all the issues that come with them. Joe Lee takes a sip of beer, and Melinda orders him to pour it down the sink: "Jesus H., you ain't seen your son in over 30 years and you can't cork it for one night?!" she turns to Sam and assures him, "We ain't alcoholics." All evidence to the contrary when they show up at Merlotte's the next day for a visit. They seem so proud of how well he's done for himself, so Sam offers them lunch. Hours later, they're still there, helping themselves to free drinks. Sam stops Tommy, who's only 19, and Joe Lee gets defensive, thinking that Sam is calling him a bad parent and a drunk. Melinda pushes them out the door, slurring, "Y'all sure know how to piss all over a perfectly fine reunion." In the middle of the night, Sam is awakened by an alarm going off. He goes over to the bar with a gun and finds a bird going through his office. It flies off, leaving a pile of clothes and a bag of something (money?) on the floor. It seems that Tommy is not a very good brother… Jason recounts the night he just had in Hot Shot to Hoyt. He's now convinced that he would be an amazing cop: "Police work ain't about just tackling people. There's marksmanship, paramilitary training…I got all that now. And let's face it, would you feel safe with me patrolling the streets, or Andy Bellefleur?" (That's no way to talk about your best friend, Jason!) Hoyt seems skeptical about Jason's sudden enthusiasm, but he helps him out by quizzing him on the written exam questions. Unfortunately, Jason doesn't take that part seriously: "The legal blood alcohol limit in the state of Louisiana is…" "When you're drunk?" Arlene makes a visit to her doctor and gets an unwelcome surprise--she's been pregnant for 2-3 months. That means the father of her baby isn't sweet, lovable Terry but murdering sociopath Rene. Because of the way she's been acting lately, Terry thinks Arlene is going to break up with him. She tells him that she's pregnant and before she can tell him the whole truth, he assumes the baby is his and gets so excited: "Thank you for making my life mean something." Arlene can't bring herself to tell him otherwise. At Merlotte's, Tara gets a call from Mike Spencer that they are holding Eggs' funeral. She runs over to the cemetery, but there is no one there but Mike and the minister. Eggs had no family or friends that they could find. It was Sookie who arranged and paid for the funeral: "None of this makes me feel better about anything. But maybe it might help you." As the ceremony begins, the camera pans down and lands on the headstone of Thomas Charles Compton. Flashback to 1868, when Bill returned home on the night that his wife, Caroline, was preparing to bury their son, Thomas, who died of smallpox at the age of 6. When Caroline sees Bill, she believes that her prayers have been answered. She pulls him inside, where their son is lying in a coffin. Bill kneels beside him: "Thomas, it's your Papa. I've come to see you off." He begins to cry, and his bloody tears show Caroline what he has become. She doesn't know if he's a ghost or a demon, but she runs away afraid after shooting him in the arm and watching his wound heal before her eyes. Outside, Lorena catches Caroline and glamours her. Lorena laughs at Bill, "You've hurt her enough for two lifetimes, William. I warned you--there's our world, and theirs. Between lies only suffering." Lorena smiles as she sees the horrible pain of that lesson sink in with Bill. He must make Caroline forget what has happened that night. Afterwards, he goes to the cemetery to bury Thomas, and Lorena tells him, "The only way to show your love for a human is to stay away…forever." In present-day, Bill wakes up in his bed crying, distraught to remember that night 150 years ago. Jason also has a dream, in which he is taking the police exam and the writing turns to Egyptian hieroglyphs. He goes up to Bud for another paper, and everyone starts laughing at him because he's not wearing any pants. They all have bullet holes in their foreheads. Asleep in his truck while the road crew is working, Lafayette wakes him up, and then Hoyt calls everybody over to a drain where he has found a body (which we know to be Jessica's trucker, even though it is now without a head or hands). Kenya, Andy, and Bud arrive on the scene. Andy thinks the guy was killed by a vampire because there's no blood in the body (Jessica's doing), and the head was ripped off rather than cut off (Franklin's doing). Looking down and realizing what his life has become, Bud suddenly walks off: "I quit! I've had it with this shit. Every time we clear one murder, two more spring up--it's like crabgrass!…43 years and what've I got to show for it? Gaps in my brain and polyps in my ass. I don't need this horse shit!" Sookie is on her front porch scrubbing the rug when she hears the thoughts of a man walking up behind her. She starts running, and he comes up and grabs hold of her, insisting that he's not trying to hurt her. "I know you're a werewolf! I've had vampire blood, I'll kick your ass!" she screams. He tells her Eric sent him: "My name's Alcide Herveaux. I'm here to look after you." As they sit down to have a cup of coffee, he looks at her wondering if she can really hear his thoughts: 'So we could have a whole conversation with me sitting here, clam shut?' "Well, it's kinda rude with just the two of us, but in a room full of strangers it might come in handy." It seems the vampire/werewolf prejudice runs both ways--Alcide says he doesn't do favors for vamps, but he agreed to escort Sookie to help his father get out of debt with Eric. Plus, he knows the pack of weres they're dealing with because his ex is banging their leader. Alcide asks Sookie if she'll be ready for them: "They took someone I love from me. I don't know about you, but I was raised to fight back." Franklin knocks on the door at Bill's house. Jessica tries to scare him away: "Listen, buddy, I don't know what you have in mind, but you're messing with the wrong girl." She bares her fangs threateningly, to which Franklin coolly shows her his own and walks in to have a chat. His job, he says, is to find things. He asks if anything has gone missing. He opens a bag and pulls out the head of her trucker (Franklin has one sick sense of humor). In exchange for helping her with that problem, he wants to know everything about Bill Compton. Alcide takes Sookie to the were bar, Lou Pine's (a pun only slightly more subtle than "Fangtasia"). Sookie walks right up to the biker weres and provokes them by saying how tough and strong vampires are. She hears one of them thinking about how they beat on a vampire the other night. Touching his chest, she sees images of Bill being cut and drained. Sookie, in her eagerness to find Bill, went off to private room with him (perhaps not understanding what Eric or Alcide has told her about how dangerous these guys are!). Thankfully, Alcide was there to save her. Franklin goes to Sookie's house to see Tara: "I met a delightful baby vampire tonight. Actually, no, she was irritating. But she did tell me a great many things, such as your name, and the fact that you live in a house owned by the human companion of Mr. Bill Compton." (Who the hell is this guy?!) When Tara refuses to invite him in, he just glamours her and comes in anyway. At the King's mansion, Coot complains that the guy he sent to retrieve Sookie has gone missing. Russell snaps, "Can your pack of imbeciles do nothing right?" Lorena speaks up, informing Russell that Eric Northman is probably responsible. He takes a "perverse interest" in Sookie and will have been watching over her in Bill's absence. At that moment, Bill strolls in calmly (looking very dashing in a white dinner jacket, I might add). His dream has left him resolved to what he must do. "I have considered your offer," he tells Russell. "My service to Queen Sophie-Anne has brought only suffering to me and the humans I have lived amongst. I recognize that now. For their safety, and also for mine, I hereby renounce my fealty to the kingdom of Louisiana, and I humbly pledge my loyalty to your Majesty." Russell is gleeful at his triumph and tells Coot they don't need "the girl" after all, which makes Lorena furious because she wanted Russell to let her kill Sookie in front of Bill. Afterwards, Bill goes into his room, followed by Lorena, who applauds his performance with Russell. At first it seems as though he has calmly accepted his fate and the destruction of his humanity once again by Lorena, but then the monster in him is unleashed. He pushes her up against the wall, growling that he will never forgive her, nor love her. She kisses him, and he throws her onto the bed, bites her, and then rips her clothes off as Lorena tells Bill to "make love" to her (she may have released him, but she's still his maker). In a fit of rage against Lorena and his hatred for her and what she has taken away from him (his home, his humanity and his freedom) he starts having violent hatred sex with Lorena.  Unable to bear looking at her face, he twists her head around backwards as he has sex with her. Even with her neck broken and blood pouring out of her mouth, Lorena says, "Oh William, I still love you." The episode ends with Bill's tormented scream. Now we have two weeks to wait in shock, disgust, and, as always, obsessive curiosity, for what will happen next. "9 Crimes" airs on July 11th, but HBO will probably give Truebies something to tide them over on the July 4th holiday. What did y'all think of this one? (Photo credit: HBO Inc.)

Joe Manganiello Wants to be the Man of Steel from the City of Steel

Joe Manganiello didn't start out wanting to be an actor.  He played football in high school, but an injury caused him to look at the two choices the torn ligament in his knee presented to him.  On one hand, he could suck it up and do as his teammates and use steroids to continue playing for the Pittsburgh high school team.  Or he could play around with cameras and acting, which he had some curiosity about. He was a sophomore when he made the decision to mess with cameras.  But it was the end of his senior year when he finally got to perform in front of his former football teammates and coaches.
"There was a sea of letterman jackets in the crowd, which was kind of unheard of.  It was all of my old football buddies that had come to check me out and also my old linebacker coach [who had] picked on me for years because I wasn't playing football."
Pittsburgh, PA is known at the City of Steel and men there emulate that nickname.  In an interview with AccessHollywood, Joe confessed he was afraid his former coach would make fun of him.  Instead, he told Joe, "I thought you were really great.  I was wrong about you." After getting his Bachelor's in Fine Arts, Joe went to Hollywood and started working in various movies and TV shows.  But his new role as a werewolf on True Blood feels like he finally got a break.  He attributes this feeling to the popularity of Charlaine Harris' books, on which True Blood is based, and that the character Alcide already had a fan base. For his debut appearance last night, Joe flew his parents to southern California  from Pittsburgh.  Having planned a private premiere, Joe mentioned concern about being made fun of - not for his acting, but for his nudity. AccessHollywood predicts that Alcide may become "True Blood's most clothes-free man". When asked about what he wants for his future, Joe reiterated something he has said in other interviews.  He wants the role of Superman.
"I'm from Pittsburgh so the Man of Steel — it's the City of Steel, so that would go a long way back home," Joe said of his dream of wearing Superman's red cape."
But for now, will we see him howl at the moon?  Watch Season 3, Sunday nights on HBO. SOURCE:  accesshollywood.com (Photo credit: HBO Inc.)

Lindsay Pulsipher on True Blood

Jason Stackhouse may have a way with the ladies, but he doesn't have much luck with love. Though things may change for Jason with the introduction of Crystal Norris to True Blood. FEARnet.com interviewed Lindsay Pulsipher, the newest face on the third season of True Blood, on her character Crystal Norris, her love for horror movies, and being part of an HBO hit. Lindsay's character comes from a religious compound in the backwoods of Louisiana. While she's had a sheltered life, she still had to grow up rather quickly. While the character is being introduced in the third season, Crystal Norris actually shows up in the fourth installment of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels. Though a fan of the show, when Lindsay accepted the part of Crystal she decided not to read the novels right away . She wanted to experience the character through Alan Ball's eyes, and then create her own perception of Crystal. Recently though, she has started reading the books; she hasn't gotten to book four yet but is enjoying the world Charlaine has created. Not only does she enjoy the world of True Blood, as a fan of the show Lindsay found Lafayette to be her favorite character. Being of fan of True Blood isn't a stretch for Lindsay. She notes,
"I'm a huge B-horror fan. I love all the horror films from the 70's, so that definitely got me into something I've always loved. The whole world of vampires is kind of new to me. I didn't think it was ever particularly important or interesting, but I can see why people love it and it's definitely an interesting subject matter, for sure."
Speaking of horror films, Lindsay notes that her favorite horror flick is hands down the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." For her, it wasn't about the fear factor of the movie, but the beauty of the grainy film. While there might not be any scream out loud moments in True Blood, there is an undeniable beauty in the show, starting with the development of each character. As for Lindsay's character Crystal, her development is as intense and complicated as the rest of the characters in Bon Temps. Crystal comes from a compound that doubles as a meth lab, and longs to see what else is out there. Meeting Jason becomes a physical manifestation of her desires to leave the compound. The season focuses on Crystal and Jason developing a romantic relationship and whether or not they can/want to make their relationship work. When asked what makes Crystal so complimentary to Jason, Lindsay offers,
"I feel like for the first time [Jason's] kind of maybe swept off his feet; and he just kind of is looking at Crystal as this new way of life. It's new for him. He's not really sure how to handle true love, I don't think, and I think that, for him, Crystal is maybe the real deal. She could be the one."
As for her thoughts on Ryan Kwanten, the actor who plays Jason, Lindsay admires how spontaneous he can be when he is acting. He knows his character so well that he is able to improv and live through Jason. Jason's character is a beautiful balance of incredible writing and incredible acting on Ryan's part. Lindsay finds herself laughing out loud because he can be very funny on set. What's not so funny is Lindsay's fear of blood through a needle, which will make her hyperventilate. Good things vampires only use fangs! It seems though Lindsay has nothing to fear when it comes to her career. Before shooting True Blood, Lindsay did a couple of feature films. Lindsay notes one in particular:
"Do Not Disturb. It's a Mali Elfman film. It's sort of a vignette of short films that they edited into a feature, and that should also be doing the festival circuit later this year. I didn't have a lot of character development in the story, but it's kind of a sci-fi theme, and it's really funny. The whole idea is really great, and my segment is definitely the weirdest of the five. [Laughs.] It's kind of a sci-fi throwback to '60s sci-fi stuff… So I've got a couple things in the works and a couple things about to do the festivals."
It seems like Lindsay is off and running with her career and fans of True Blood have been given a rare opportunity to see an actress grow into her spotlight. SOURCE: FEARnet.com (Photo Credit: ew.com)

Alexander Skarsgard to Star in "The Elephant"

Alexander Skarsgard has signed on to star in "The Elephant", an oil-rig thriller from director Hans Petter Moland.  Skarsgard is set to play a Norweigan roustabout who tangles with a redneck American driller. The two bond while attempting to shut down an oil rig explosion. Moland's last film "A Somewhat Gentle Man" stared Alex's father Stellan Skarsgard and won an Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. While it may seem like the movie is being made in response to current events, it was actually inspired by Magnar Jonsgaard's novel "Black Rain" which is about American's drilling for oil in the North Sea where Jonsgaard worked during the 1970's. Moland described the film as "Norway's rags-to-riches story that changed an entire society and revealed the abuse of huge wealth and its impact on individual lives." The film's title comes from a slang term used to describe an oil field that produces at least 500 million barrels. Casting is currently underway for the three American stars and filming is set to begin in late autumn or early 2011. Skarsgard will be seen next in "Straw Dogs" and "13" and has also signed on for Lars von Trier's "Melancholia" and Peter Berg's "Battleship". Source:  The Wrap Photo Credit:  HBO Inc.

Getting to Know True Blood's Dawn Olivieri

Although we won't be meeting her character, Janice Herveaux, until the upcoming Season 3 episode "9 Crimes," True Blood fans might want to get acquainted with Dawn Olivieri, the fascinating actress who plays her. In an interview with UMM, Dawn shared how she came into acting, and what's next for her. Dawn describes herself as something of a gypsy. She has moved around a lot and would probably still be traveling the world if she weren't pursuing a career in acting. She ascribes to the kind of lifestyle in which "you go wherever and don't have a lot with you, but you're happy." Her first big role was as Lydia in the most recent chapter of NBC's Heroes. Previously, she had been working as a model and not having much success with it. Heroes helped her gain confidence, and Dawn says the experience was "a dream and scary at the same time because it was my first role like that. Being someone who doesn't come from theater, I had to work it out on my own." On True Blood, she will be playing Alcide's sister, Janice. Fans of Charlaine Harris' books may know what to expect, but Dawn didn't want to give many details about her character. In addition to True Blood, Dawn has several feature films coming out this year: a romantic comedy called Boy Toy; Drop Dead Gorgeous; and Dozers, which she describes as a "fun, campy sci-fi thriller." She is also in the early stages of developing her own sci-fi series. Dawn says she has the most fun playing the badass chick. To that end, she's acquiring a set of skills to make herself ready for action--jiu jitsu training, a motorcycle license, and sword-fighting are some of her current projects. She looks to Johnny Depp's career as a model for her own--she'd like to establish herself in television for a few years and then be doing "really interesting, smart films." Dawn seems like a great actress to bring to life Janice Herveaux, with the fiery attitude of a protective sister. We will get to see for ourselves when "9 Crimes" airs on HBO, July 11th!
