True Blood Dedicated to Gay Friendly Programming

True Blood has been called many things, from another vampire show to HBO's hottest hour of television. It's been scrutinized and glorified. The violence and sex have been applauded or have left viewers shocked. Everyone has an opinion and everyone talks about True Blood. One thing that everyone can agree is that True Blood is the most gay-friendly show on television. According to the 15th annual "Where We Are On TV" report from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), True Blood's large cast and often sexually ambiguous characters has made it the most inclusive and welcoming show currently on air. True Blood proudly has 6 regular and recurring LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, transgender) characters. LGBT characters will account for 3.9% of all 587 characters in 84 scripted series in the Fall line up. This is good news as the percentage has gone up from last year by 3%. ABC has had the highest percentage of LBGT characters for 5 years straight, while CBS has made improvement thanks to the investegator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) from The Good Wife being revealed as a bisexual. Prominent gay characters were revealed in last season premiere's including Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) from Glee as well as Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) in Modern Family. GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios noted,

"The increase in lesbian, gay, and bisexual characters on prime-time television not only reflects the shift in American culture towards greater awareness and understanding of our community, but also a new industry standard that a growing number of creators and networks are adopting"

It seems that True Blood is paving the way for equality and respect amongst it's viewing population. The prominence of gay characters as well as the fact that bisexual vampire Pam (Kristin Bauer) has been made a series regular has made the HBO series the most gay friendly show on television.
