"True Blood" A Cure For Anemic Television

HOLLYWOOD—HBO's series "True Blood" just continues improving. Every week they answer one question while making us ask 10 more by the end of the episode. The show's fans are not only dedicated and loyal but intelligent, witty and a lot of fun. Seeing their reactions to the series is so much fun. Even the persistent "True Blood" T-Shirt salesman on Facebook is a lot of fun. He pops on Facebook every few minutes to offer T-Shirts for sale, name your blood type, or character and he's willing to plaster that person's face on a T-Shirt and ship them out to you. All right, maybe he's not the most fun part of watching the members of this social networking group for "True Blood" fans, but he sure is a capitalist. And I love that. He can't be persuaded or insulted enough to go away. ashleyjonessexy-C_1.jpg Sunday night's episode was both exciting and very fast-paced. The show had a different feel to it.  So I asked my friend Lynn Dougherty, who is a "TB" expert to explain what I was seeing that made me feel there was a distinct difference in the previous week's episode? Lynn lamented, "Alan Ball wrote it and I think that was why there was so much humor. Michael Lehman directed it and he is just wonderful at directing. So the combination was great." The episode's title was "Shake and Fingerpop." MaryAnn was jumping around, gyrating out in the woods while her party guests were in a hypnotic state throwing pies and punches and Tara and her hunky guy Eggs seemed under MaryAnn's spell while making love upstairs. The most shocking scene, however, was played by Nelsan Ellis, as Lafayette and Alexander Skarsgard, as Eric. After the previous episodes of Lafayette being tortured by the vicious vampire Eric and his team, I thought he'd kill Lafayette Sunday night when he appeared at the living room window of Lafayette's. When Eric was told, "I don't have to let you in," he calmly explained to Lafayette that he had one of two choices. He could lose his leg to the infection or he could be healed by the magical powers of a vampire's blood. Nelsan Ellis's reaction was dead on. Who wanted to lose their leg to infection? But Lafayette is now under Eric's control.  What will he be forced to do next? Viewers want to know. Lafayette allowed Eric in and upon feeding off of Eric's blood, he was immediately dancing and humping the floor in ecstasy. He knew the healing powers of a vampire's blood, but to viewers surprise, the healing was more than just gratifying, it was electrifying. Facebook lit up with the following comments about that scene. Nicole Styles chimed in, "Lafayette was hilarious." While Lynn Dougherty stated, "Lafayette was also so funny after he got Eric's blood and Eric's attitude about it made it even funnier. I loved Lafayette dancing around and being all happy, that was a riot." She also added, "I loved Bill and Sookie arriving in Dallas and Jessica not being able get out of the coffin in the beginning; that was hysterical. And her glamouring of the driver and making him scream out also was funny." Sentiments about the actor who plays Eric are almost unanimous with fan Cori Wood Kennedy stating, "Oh I wouldn't even give it a second thought. I'd bite Eric in a heartbeat. Oh my gosh, he's so fine." Eric and the actor who plays him are handsome guys. Alexander Skarsgard will most definitely become a star after this series. His portrayal of the evil vampire is spot on. He's managed to make Eric one of the most charismatic characters of the new hit series. Jessica played by Deborah Ann Woll is absolutely funny. The actress manages to make the show well rounded with her over-the-top acting, which is not a bad thing in this hip series. Everyone is a bit off kilter both on screen and in character, but it seems to work perfectly for the show. I am no closer to learning who my friend Ashley Jones's character Daphne is either. Ashley refuses to divulge any secrets about the series and the storyline, not even to friends or family. But when Daphne whispered in her boss Sam's ear, "I know what you are," then took him upstairs, it was a highlight which got fans into a frenzy. Ashley Jones is not playing Bridget Forrester on "True Blood." By now you can tell she's one of the mysteries on the show, with fans speculating who and what Daphne really is. I'm amongst them now, and can hardly wait for the reveal. In a recent interview Jones stated how much she enjoys the differences. "Yes, Daphne is exciting and fun to play. I love the idea that I have the opportunity to make the most out of both Bridget and Daphne." Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are the super couple Sookie and Bill on the series. They traveled to Dallas in order to complete a project for Eric, but were stymied at every turn. Between their lust for each other, Sookie's curiosity and Jessica's constant trouble making, the couple was unable to find out what they are searching for, to find the missing vampires or to have any fun together. Fan Aimee McNamee called tonight's episode, "Fantastic imagery, acting and writing!" While Emily Burns replied, "I love it but it's hard to take the cliffhangers. I can't wait until next Sunday! So Maryann is that clawed half bull thing? I wasn't expecting that!" Nor was I, Emily. I'm sure we are in for quite a few surprises in upcoming episodes. MaryAnn is a lot more than a hostess who gives a lot of parties. It seems she's very dangerous indeed. But all of us are wondering what her plan is for Tara, whom she seems to be toying with like a cat with a mouse in its paws. Carrie Keller an avid fan summed it up best about Sunday night's episode, "I never thought I could love a series more. I can't wait for Sunday nights, 'True Blood' has made a Sunday night worth something!" and Ade Dayo concluded at the end of last week's episode, "That was Fangtastic!" My friend Bill Sanderson who portrays Sheriff Bud Dearborne plays the redneck policeman perfectly.  Watching him is very easy to do. Bill is perhaps the most prolific character actor in the last two decades.  He can always be depended on to give a perfect performance. Who knew that vampire drama could be so hot, exciting, hip and up-to-date? Fans of the 1920s and '30s Universal Studios monsters and vampires would be astonished how sexy and alluring these new vampires can be today. Another favorite of mine is actor Ryan Kwanten. He's become the resident hunk, who plays a bubba to say it best. His character Jason is not very smart, but the ladies love the guy and his portrayal of the innocent is dead on target in my opinion. Lynn Dougherty summed him up this way, "Jason was hysterical with all of his miss-quotes, like 'that's called pre-medicated.' He is so slow, and yet, so endearing." Endearing is the term that best describes Kwanten not just his character Jason. He's going to become a huge star one day as well. This show is nail-biting exciting and thought provoking as well. Not since the 1980s "Twin Peaks," a David Lynch production, have I seen a show that has captured my attention and a cult following of millions across the world that grows by the minute. If you haven't met some of the greatest fans any show could ever be lucky enough to have, then join us on Sunday nights at: http://www.facebook.com/TrueBlood. Who knew interaction with so many millions of people could be so much fun? It's delicious meeting all of them online Sunday nights dishing on their feelings about the storylines and enjoying a series once again on television that I must add is for adults only. However, it's not vulgar or boring. It has found the perfect mix of sexiness, humor and horror in a way only groundbreaking HBO can offer. Check local times in your area.
