It seems unanimous that the cast and creator of HBO's blockbuster series, True Blood, are having a blast. Not just because the fan base doubled during Season 2, but because they never know what's coming at them next. Anna Paquin, the main character, Sookie Stackhouse, said in an article on USAToday.com that there's no way to get bored on this show. Because just when you think you've done it all, "something weirder and wilder comes out of the woodwork". And Season 3 promises to provide that weirder and wilder scenario. While the season will somewhat follow Charlaine Harris' third book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, Club Dead, we will certainly be seeing lots of werewolves in addition to vampires and other supernaturals. We fans can only wait until Season 3 airs on June 13. The cast is already having fun on the set. According to Kristin Bauer van Straten, vampire Pam, she received a phone call to come in for a coffin fitting. Stephen Moyer, Sookie's vampire boyfriend Bill Compton, was delighted with the real wolves brought to the set. "They're extraordinary creatures. They never stop moving. They're enormous and powerful." Creator Alan Ball is also having, well, a ball! "It is so much fun. If you had told me I would be doing a vampire show with werewolves and would be having more fun than I'd had in my life, I would have said, 'You're high."As a screenwriting Oscar winner (for American Beauty), Alan is well aware of the necessity of keeping the characters grounded.
"We might as well have a sign in the writers' room that says, 'It's the emotions, stupid.' We try to make sure the characters' emotional lives are what's driving the story. Otherwise, it's set pieces and special effects. We have such good actors that they can play the romance, the yearning, the weaknesses, the upsets, the disappointments and the triumphs."So what about the plot for Season 3? Deborah Ann Woll, teen vampire Jessica, marvels at the new faces around the script reading table and said it feels like there are several shows going on simultaneously. In some respects, she's correct. We have one storyline with Sookie trying to find the seemingly kidnapped Bill. Within that story is the assignment of werewolf Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello) by vampire sheriff Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) to assist Sookie. According to Alexander, Eric hates werewolves. "In his opinion, werewolves are very primitive, stupid, disgusting, not sophisticated. After a while, you'll find out there's a deeper reason he hates them." Shapeshifter Sam Merlotte, played by Sam Trammell, is in a search for his biological parents - another main story this season. And he's in for surprises (as if last season wasn't enough for the poor doggy). He kind of opens a Pandora's box. "But he can't put the top back on the box." Meanwhile, Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) and Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) are trying to deal with the death of Tara's boyfriend from last season, who, by the way, was shot and killed by Jason. Thrown into the mix is the vampire politics, which we'll learn a lot more about as we meet the vampire king of Mississippi (Denis O'Hare) as he interacts with the vampire Queen of Louisiana (Evan Rachel Wood). Anna Paquin was asked if she would be interested in continuing with the show if it were to include all of Charlaine Harris' 10-13 books.
"I'd do it until they pull the plug," she says. "I don't know how long everyone's going to want to watch us running around biting each other and having all the sex and blood, but I think we'll do this until they tell us we have to stop.
