William Sanderson of True Blood Speaks to a Friend

william-sandersonWilliam Sanderson is probably best known for being Larry of "Larry, Darrel and Darrel" on The Bob Newhart Show but don't tell that to True Blood fans who know him as Sheriff Bud Dearborn, Bon Temps somewhat squirrelly, vampire-hating, head law enforcement officer. It's a thin line to walk between crackpot redneck, comedy relief and quiet steady-as-you-go competence but Sanderson manages to squeeze all that into the role. This week he sat down with an old friend of his, Tommy Garrett, for a one on one catch-up chat which clearly shows not only their friendship but how deeply Garrett admires Sanderson's admittedly broad appeal and talent. During the interview Sanderson subtly demonstrates his humility and 'common man' characteristics by avowing gratitude for his roles and calling himself 'an old geezer' when referring to his friendly relationship with 'young, handsome' Ryan Kwanten (True Blood's Jason Stackhouse). In the interview he was asked about this year's prospects and his answer mirrored that humility by extending his concern for the whole world and not just focusing on himself, and could that be a hint of dry humor as well?
"... Sanderson said, "Not withstanding the current economic crisis, I believe 2009 will be the best ever for me and my family. I have so much to be thankful for; I'm currently healthy, working and have a roof over my head. An end to all wars, peace, love and prosperity would be nice too."
Sanderson seems to be an easy going sort with a quick wit and when asked about whether he was concerned about typecasting he quipped, ""I'd rather be typecast than not cast at all. I've had roles where I've played redeeming characters, but they all pay the bills." For a great read trot on over to Garrett's article on the Canyon News and check out the run down of all the impressive roles that Sanderson has played. Amazingly you can hear him 'speaking' the words in the interview and then I expected him to turn around and bop 'Andy' on the back of the head and tell him to get back to work!
